What Should I Do When…? Arizona Traffic Lessons and Reminders

traffic lessonsMost adults spend a lot of time behind the wheel of a car. By some estimates, Americans drive an average 25.7 miles per day during the winter months, and 30.6 miles per day throughout the summer. Most of those miles involve routine commutes and traffic patterns, but every now and again, something out of the ordinary can happen. Do you know what to do in the event of a power outage or the special rules regarding school zones? Read on for some traffic lessons and reminders that you may have forgotten about since the days of your first drivers education course.

When a Traffic Light Is Out…
If a traffic light is completely dark, all drivers need to treat it as though it were a regular four-way stop. Everyone has to stop at the intersection and follow standard protocol. Sometimes, broken traffic lights will flash instead of going completely out. In that case, one lane usually has a yellow flashing light, and the other has a red flashing light. In that case, the lane with the red light should yield to traffic coming from the other direction.

When Two Cars Approach an Intersection at the Same Time…
There’s no need to argue over who goes first. Defensive driving classes teach that at a four-way intersection, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. At T-intersections, the driver on the continuing street gets the right of way.

When You’re Driving in a School Zone…
Speed limits are often lowered in school zones, especially while classes are in session. However, certain other rules also apply: It is illegal to overtake another vehicle in a school zone, for example, whether by passing or driving around a vehicle waiting to turn left. And no matter where you are, remember to stop for school buses with flashing lights that are dropping off or picking up kids.

Traffic lessons don’t end once you obtain your driver’s license. Make the roads a safer place for everyone to drive by giving yourself a refresher course on what to do in specific situations. The more we all know, the safer we all can be!
